What to Expect from Counselling
Whether you’re new to counselling or have previous experience, it’s natural to have questions about what to expect. Understanding the process can help ease any concerns and make the experience more comfortable.
Your First Session
Our journey begins with an initial appointment, either face-to-face or over the telephone. This session is an opportunity for us to:
-
Discuss what has brought you to counselling
-
Explore any questions, hopes, or concerns you may have
-
Determine whether we’re a good fit to work together
Building a strong therapeutic relationship is an essential part of the process, and this first meeting lays the foundation for our work..
Moving Forward
If we both feel comfortable continuing, we’ll arrange sessions at a time, day, and location that suits you. We’ll also discuss whether short-term or longer-term counselling feels right for you:
-
Short-term counselling typically lasts 6 to 12 sessions
-
Longer-term counselling is more open-ended, allowing for deeper exploration
We’ll regularly review our sessions to ensure they continue to meet your needs. I understand that you may not know exactly what you need at the start, and that’s okay—we’ll work together to explore what feels right for you.
Confidentiality & Agreements
In our first assessment session, we’ll go through a counselling contract, which outlines:
-
Confidentiality and how your information is protected
-
Appointment details and session structure
-
My approach and how we’ll work together
This ensures transparency and helps create a safe, supportive space for your journey.
